～かわりに — In return; instead | JLPT N3 grammar

Meaning

Use it for a balanced exchange, replacing a person or action, or the compensating side of one choice. It is not for an accidental contrast in which B neither replaces nor offsets anything.

When to use it

Where to use it: It fits 'I will do it in your place,' a reciprocal favor, and the clear cost of an advantage: cheap but far away.
Where not to use it: Do not use it for unrelated facts or substitution with no identifiable original A.

In an exchange, A and B should feel like comparable sides of an arrangement or choice.

Common mistakes

Remember の after a noun: 私のかわりに.
Do not confuse it with 反面: かわりに highlights compensation or replacement, not merely a dual nature.
