Meaning
~際(に)/~際は is a formal 'when, at the time of', pointing to a specific moment or occasion. It is typical of announcements, instructions, letters and business language. In everyday speech people say とき instead.
Formation
- Vる+際(に/は): 使用する → 使用する際は; 借りる → 借りる際
- Vた+際(に/は): 行った → 行った際に; 帰国した → 帰国した際には
- N+の+際(に/は): 火災 → 火災の際は; お支払い → お支払いの際に
When to use it
- Where to use it
- Announcements, rules, instructions, polite letters and business talk: お降りの際は足元にご注意ください, ご来店の際は….
- Where not to use it
- Not in casual chat with friends: ✗暇な際に遊びに来てね → 暇なときに. With adjectives 際 is rare, apart from set business phrases such as 必要な際は. For a period of life (✗子どもの際) or a hypothetical 'in case', とき and 場合は are the better choice.

Important notes
- Vる際 presents an action as prospective, general or associated with the occasion; Vた際 presents it as completed at the relevant point. The boundary depends on the verb and context: Vる際 does not mechanically mean only “before starting” or “on the way.”
- 際は highlights a condition in rules (~の際は…してください), 際に neutrally names the moment, and 際には combines both; bare 際 with no particle also occurs.
- この際 is a set phrase, 'now that it has come to this / while we're at it' (この際、全部捨てよう); it doesn't mean 'at the time of this'.
Common mistakes
- ✗ 火災な際は、階段を使ってください。 → ✓ 火災の際は、階段を使ってください。 — a noun needs の.

- ✗ 大阪へ行ったの際に、たこ焼きを食べた。 → ✓ 大阪へ行った際に、たこ焼きを食べた。 — no の follows a verb; の connects a noun to 際.
