JLPT N3 · Permission and obligation

It's all right, I don't mind (polite)

Meaning

Permission or consent, 'it's fine, I have no objection': It is more polite and firmer than てもいい and often signals willingness to accept a less-than-ideal option: 古くてもかまわない 'even if it's old'. It is not resignation, 'it can't be helped' (ても仕方がない).

Formation

  6. Polite and in requests: 〜

When to use it

Where to use it
In polite permission and requests (ここに置いてもかまいませんか — はい、かまいません), in notices and business language, and when accepting a compromise: 多少高くてもかまわない.
Where not to use it
Not for resignation to the inevitable: 'the train stopped, being late can't be helped' is 遅れても仕方がない. Among friends, plain いいよ is more common.

Common mistakes

  • ✗ 返事は来週てもかまいません → ✓ 返事は来週でもかまいません — ても attaches to て forms; after a noun you need でも.
— 'there's no point regretting it now' is ても仕方がない; with かまわない it becomes an odd permission, 'feel free to regret it'.
