Meaning
A hope or wish: 'I hope…', 'it would be nice if…'. Usually about things the speaker can't fully control: the weather, exam results, health. With のに it becomes a wish for something that isn't so; with a question word and か it turns into a request for advice, not a wish.
Formation
- Vる + といい: 晴れる → 晴れるといいね
- Vない + といい: 降らない → 降らないといいなあ
- Aい + といい: 近い → 近いといいな
- なA / N + だ + といい — 元気 → 元気だといいですね; 休み → 休みだといいのに
- Vたら + いい: 見られる → 見られたらいいなあ; N → Nだったらいいのに
- Vば / Aければ + いい: 下がる → 下がればいいんですが; 安い → 安ければいい
- Endings: ~ですね (a wish for the listener), ~なあ (thinking aloud), ~んだけど / んですが (hope mixed with worry), ~のに (about something unreal): 間に合う → 間に合うといいんですが
When to use it
- Where to use it
- Wishing someone well (試験、合格するといいですね), daydreaming aloud (オーロラが見られたらいいなあ), anxious hope (熱が下がればいいんですが), regret about the unreal (毎日が日曜日だったらいいのに).
- Where not to use it
- Grammar: question word + たらいいですか / ばいいですか (どうしたらいいですか) asks for advice — a different topic; after a noun or な-adjective you cannot drop だ (✗元気といい). Style: for your own action that is fully up to you, people usually say Vたい or Vようと思う — といい makes it sound as if the outcome is out of your hands. Also, ~といいですよ can be advice ('you'd better…'); context tells which.

Important notes
- As wishes, といい, たらいい and ばいい are close. といい is the most common and neutral, especially with ですね / なあ; たらいいなあ sounds dreamy and casual; ばいい most often appears with のに, けど or なあ.
- ~といいのに / ~たらいいのに — 'if only…, but it isn't so'. ~といいんですが / けど: hope tinged with worry that it won't come true.
Common mistakes
- ✗ 明日晴れたといいですね → ✓ 明日晴れるといいですね — for the future (明日), と takes the dictionary form (or Vない). Vた + といい is only for something that has already happened when the outcome isn't known yet: 無事に着いたといいけど.
- ✗ ご両親がいつまでもお元気といいですね → ✓ お元気だといいですね — な-adjectives and nouns need だ.
- △ (to a friend before an exam) 合格したいですね (meant 'I hope you pass') → 合格するといいですね — たい talks about wanting ('you want to pass, huh?'), not about wishing someone else well.
