～ところだ・～ところ（＋助詞） — About to; in progress; just finished | JLPT N3 grammar

Meaning

Use it for a snapshot of a precise phase: Vるところ before starting, Vているところ during the action, and Vたところ immediately after. It is not for habits, broad periods, or the literal noun 'place.'

Formation

Vる＋ところだ・Vている＋ところだ・Vた＋ところだ
ところ＋に／へ／を／で when the whole phase has a role in the next clause

When to use it

Where to use it: It fits when the phase is genuinely close to now or another stated moment and often appears with 今, ちょうど, or たった今.
Where not to use it: Do not use it for regular actions or a result completed long ago; Vたところ should feel immediate.

Important notes

A particle after ところ gives the whole scene its role: ところを見た, ところに電話が来た.

Common mistakes

Do not confuse grammatical ところ with the noun meaning 'place.'
Do not replace ordinary Vている with Vているところ unless the current phase itself is important.
