Meaning
Use it to act before a state changes or to describe a gradual change arising during a process. Do not use it for a plain scheduled interval with two parallel actions; ~間 is normally better there.
Formation
- Vる/Vている/Vない+うちに
- い-adjective+うちに・な-adjective+なうちに・N+のうちに
When to use it
- Where to use it
- It fits a disappearing opportunity ('while it is warm', 'before it gets dark') and an unintentional change that develops while A continues.
- Where not to use it
- Do not use it for a precise event inside a fixed period or for two actions lasting throughout that period; distinguish ~間/~間に.

Important notes
- With an intentional B it often means 'do it in time'; with an unintentional B it marks gradual change.
Common mistakes
- Do not place an instantaneous state before うちに unless it can meaningfully continue.
- Do not confuse Vないうちに 'before it happens' with Vる前に, which merely states sequence.
