Adds the meaning of starting an action or process to a verb stem.

Formation

  1. Drop ます and add 始める: 降ります → 降り始める

  • 始める marks the beginning of an activity without necessarily implying suddenness.

Common mistakes

  • Use the ます stem: 読み始める. 読んで始める is not the same compound.
