〜かどうか

An embedded yes-no question

Meaning

Embeds a question with two possibilities: whether something is true or not.

Formation

  1. Plain form + かどうか: 降るかどうか分かりません
  2. Nouns and na-adjectives drop だ: 必要かどうか

  • かどうか embeds a yes-or-no question.

Common mistakes

  • With a question word use か alone: いつ来るか, not いつ来るかどうか.
