ながら

Doing one thing while doing another

Meaning

Shows that two actions happen at the same time. The first action is usually secondary and the second is the main one.

Formation

  1. Drop ます from the background action and add ながら: 聞きます → 聞きながら
  2. The second action is the main one; both share one subject

Important notes

  • ながら links simultaneous actions by the same doer; the main action comes last.

Common mistakes

  • Use the ます stem: 音楽を聞きながら勉強する, not 聞くながら.
