V普通形 + のを／のは

Turns an action into an object or sentence focus

Meaning

The nominalizer の lets an action become the object of 忘れる or 知る, or the focused element in のはNです.

Formation

  1. Plain form + の + を / は / が: 消すのを忘れました
  2. With perception verbs (見る, 聞こえる) and 待つ only の is used; fixed patterns such as ことができる and ことがある need こと; with 忘れる, 知る or 好き both are often possible
  3. Focus: …のは + N + です names the place, time or person: 父が生まれたのは北海道です

Important notes

  • の can nominalize a perceived event — 鳥が飛ぶのを見た.

Common mistakes

  • Do not interchange の and こと in every pattern: ことができる is the fixed ability construction.
