たことがあります

Have done it before

Meaning

Used to talk about past experience in life. It follows the plain past form of a verb.

Formation

  1. た form + ことがあります — 行ったことがあります
  2. Negative: ことがありません. Not used with a specific recent time (昨日, 先週) — use the ordinary past: 昨日見ました (plain: 昨日見た)

Important notes

  • たことがある reports experience rather than the details of a particular event.

Common mistakes

  • Say 昨日行きました for yesterday's event, not 昨日行ったことがあります.
