〜ておく

Do in advance; leave as is

Meaning

Used when something is done in advance as preparation for a future situation, or to leave something in its current state: 窓を開けておいてください — please leave the window open.

Formation

  1. て form + おく — 買っておきます
  2. Colloquial contraction: ておく → とく, でおく → どく

Important notes

  • ておく can mean preparation or maintaining a state: 窓を開けておく.

Common mistakes

  • Preparation is ておく; a prepared result viewed as a state is てある.
