つもりです

Intend to, mean to

Meaning

Shows the speaker's intention or plan. It usually follows the dictionary form of a verb.

Formation

  1. Dictionary form or ない + つもりです: 留学するつもりです, 行かないつもりです
  2. To deny any intention: 行くつもりはありません — I have no intention of going (plain: 行くつもりはない)

Important notes

  • つもり states a personal intention, which can still change.

Common mistakes

  • 行かないつもり means intending not to go; 行くつもりはない denies having an intention to go.
