〜うちに

While it lasts, before it changes

Meaning

Marks a period while a state lasts: do something before it changes (温かいうちに食べて), or describe a change that happens in the course of an action (読んでいるうちに眠くなった).

Formation

  1. Before うちに: ている or ない (読んでいるうちに、忘れないうちに); dictionary form for a state (日本にいるうちに) or repeated activity meaning ‘in the course of’ (何度も聞くうちに覚えた); い-adjective, な-adjective＋な or noun＋の.
  2. Two uses: act while the condition still holds, or note a change that happens during a process: 読んでいるうちに眠くなった

Important notes

  • うちに can mean before a state ends or during a process that brings change.

Common mistakes

  • Dictionary form fits states and repeated activity: 日本にいるうちに; 何度も聞くうちに. It is not freely interchangeable with ている for any action.
