Vる／Vないようにしてください

Asks the listener to make sure something is (not) done

Meaning

ようにしてください asks the listener to take care that a behavior or result is achieved — often as an ongoing habit or rule, but also for one important occasion.

Formation

  1. Dictionary form or ない + ようにしてください: 飲むようにしてください
  2. It asks the listener to make sure something happens (or does not happen) — usually a habit or rule, but it can also concern one important occasion: 明日は遅れないようにしてください

Common mistakes

  • For a direct immediate request, てください may fit better; 毎日読むようにしてください asks for a routine.
