Marks a direction of movement.

Formation

  1. Goes after a place: 日本へ行きます; written へ, read e
  2. へ stresses direction, に the arrival point; with motion verbs they often swap

Important notes

  • へ marks the direction of movement and is read e: 日本へ行く. Before a noun it becomes への: 日本への旅行.

Common mistakes

  • へ is not a general replacement for に — 東京に住んでいます, not 東京へ住んでいます, and a point in time is 七時に, not 七時へ.
