Important notes
- ほしい is about wanting a thing, たい about wanting to do something: 本がほしい, 本を読みたい. ほしい inflects like an i-adjective: ほしくない, ほしかった.
Common mistakes
- Do not attach ほしい to a verb (読むほしい). For another person's wish use ほしがっている or report their words; asking a superior 何がほしいですか sounds too direct.
