Adds 'also'; with a negative, 'not … either'

Meaning

Adds 'also'; with a negative, 'not … either' (私も行きません); after a question word with a negative, 'no one / nothing' (何も分かりません); AもBも + negative: neither A nor B.

Formation

  1. It replaces は, が or を: 私も学生です
  2. It is added to に, で, へ: ここにもあります

Important notes

  • も replaces は, が and を (私も学生です) and is added after に and で (学校にもあります, 家でも勉強します). With a negative it means 'not … either': 私も行きません.

Common mistakes

  • Put も after the word that adds to the earlier statement: 私も読みます (I read too) differs from 雑誌も読みます (I read magazines too).
