Important notes

  • ている covers an ongoing action, a habit or a resulting state: 毎日走っている (runs every day), 結婚している (is married). 住む, 知る and 持つ describe a current state with ている: 東京に住んでいます.

Common mistakes

  • 'I don't know' is 知りません, not 知っていません. Do not read every ている as 'right now': 毎日走っています is a habit.
