Meaning
Regret or reproach about what isn't so: 'if only…', 'you should have…', 'why not just…'. The speaker pictures the opposite of reality: about the past with ~ばよかったのに or ~ば~たのに, about the present with ~ばいいのに. Aimed at someone else's actions, it often sounds like a reproach or hindsight advice.
Formation
When to use it
- Where to use it
- Reproach or sympathy in hindsight (もっと早く言えばよかったのに), an unreal condition and its result (タクシーに乗れば、間に合ったのに), wishing things were different now (もう少し安ければいいのに, 先生に聞けばいいのに).
- Where not to use it
- Grammar: ば needs a second part — いい, よかった or a result (✗言えばのに); for real facts, 'although' is ordinary のに (薬を飲んだのに治らない). Style: ~ばよかったのに aimed at the listener is a clear reproach; with superiors soften it (~ばよかったですね) or give advice for the future (~たらどうですか).

Important notes
- ~ばよかった without のに is usually regret about your own action; with のに it more often targets someone else (reproach, sympathy) or the situation. In the full pattern ~ば~たのに people talk about themselves freely: 飲まなければ、頭が痛くならなかったのに.
~ばいいのに about another person sounds like a mild reproach: 'they could just…'.
Common mistakes
- ✗ 時間があれば行ったので → ✓ 時間があれば行ったのに — ので gives a real reason; an unreal 'I would have gone (but didn't)' needs のに.
- △ (about yourself) 傘を持ってくればよかったのに (meant 'I should have brought an umbrella') → 傘を持ってくればよかった — with のに it sounds like blaming someone else or showy annoyance; about your own slip people usually drop のに.
