Meaning
別に + negative brushes something off as unimportant or as having no special reason: 'not particularly', 'not really', 'it's not like…'. On its own, 「別に。」 means 'Nothing much' and often sounds curt or cold.
Formation
- Standalone answer: 「
When to use it
- Where to use it
- In conversation, to wave away a question or a suspicion: 別に急いでいない 'I'm not in any particular hurry', 別に用はない 'I don't really want anything'. It often implies 'so don't worry' or 'so what?'.
- Where not to use it
- Grammar: in the sense 'not particularly', 別に normally needs a negative predicate (✗別にこの映画が好きです); the affirmative exceptions are a few set evaluations such as 別にいい 'fine, whatever' and 別に平気/大丈夫 'I'm fine, it's nothing'. Without a negative, 別に usually means 'separately': 送料は別にかかります. Style: it is casual and can sound dismissive, so with superiors or in formal speech 特に~ない is the safer choice.

Important notes
- A bare 「別に。」, or 「別に…」 with a pause, sounds curt and can signal that you don't want to talk. Politer answers are 「いえ、特に。」
- The common 別にいいよ/別に構わない means 'sure, I don't mind'. Intonation decides whether it sounds easygoing or sulky.
- 特に is a neutral 'especially' — it works in affirmatives (特に好きだ) and in polite negatives (特にありません); 別に is casual and goes with negatives.
Common mistakes
— 'I especially like it' is affirmative, so it needs 特に; 別に meaning 'particularly' goes with a negative.
— with a fever you didn't sleep at all: that calls for the strength of 全然, while 別に only plays down importance and makes no sense here.
(meant a polite 'no questions') → 「いいえ、特にありません。」 — a bare 「別に。」 to a teacher sounds careless, almost rude.
