Meaning
どうしても roughly means 'no matter what' — 1) with a wish or a need — 'at all costs, really must' (どうしても行きたい); 2) with a negative, usually a potential one — 'just can't, however hard I try' (どうしても思い出せない); 3) 'inevitably, it always ends up that way' (どうしても~てしまう).
Formation
- どうしても + Vたい — 登る → どうしても登りたい
- どうしても + Nがほしい/Vてほしい — 来る → どうしても来てほしい
- どうしても + Vなければならない — 出る → どうしても出なければならない
- どうしても + Vない (often potential) — 思い出せる → どうしても思い出せない
- どうしても + Aに/Aくなれない — 好きだ → どうしても好きになれない
- どうしても + Vてしまう/~くなる (inevitably) — 食べる → どうしても食べてしまう
When to use it
- Where to use it
- 1) A strong wish or a pressing need: どうしても今日中に終わらせなければならない. 2) Failure despite every effort: 何度やってもどうしても開かない. 3) Something that happens by itself: 甘いものを見ると、どうしても食べてしまう.
- Where not to use it
- Grammar: どうしても is a self-contained adverb; a ても-clause does not attach to it (✗どうしても練習しても — use いくら練習しても). Meaning and style: without the idea of 'despite obstacles', 'at any cost' or 'just can't', it does not simply mean 'very'; for an invitation like 'do come' ぜひ is more natural — どうしても来てください sounds like an insistent, almost desperate plea.

Important notes
- どうしても~ない implies you have already tried — どうしても開かない 'it just won't open'. なかなか~ない only says it is taking a long time.
- In the 'inevitably' sense どうしても often pairs with ~てしまう, ~くなる, ~がちだ: 冬はどうしても運動不足になりがちだ.
- ぜひ means 'by all means' only in requests, invitations and wishes (ぜひ来てください), with no sense of obstacles; どうしても means 'at any cost, despite everything', and with a negative 'just can't', where ぜひ is impossible.
- どうして asks 'why?'; どうしても means 'at all costs' or 'just can't'.
Common mistakes
- ✗ どうして行きたいです。 → ✓ どうしても行きたいです。 — without も it is the question word 'why'; 'at all costs' is only どうしても.
- ✗ どうしても練習しても、うまくならない。 → ✓ いくら練習しても、うまくならない。 — 'however much I practise' is いくら/どんなに + ても; どうしても doesn't take a ても-clause.
- △ パーティーにどうしても来てください。 (meant a polite 'please do come') → ぜひ来てください。 — どうしても sounds like an insistent plea, as if the party can't happen without the guest.
