Meaning
いくら / どんなに + ても means “no matter how much A, B still holds.” It usually highlights degree, quantity or repeated effort. いくら can also concede a status or argument: いくら親でも, “even as a parent.” Both factual and hypothetical contexts are possible.
Formation
- いくら+N+でも — 親 → いくら親でも ("parent or not")
When to use it
- Where to use it
- For wasted effort (いくら考えても分からない), habits that hold under any conditions (いくら寒くても走る), and limits that shouldn't be crossed (いくら親でも).
- Where not to use it
- It does not mean “the more…, the more…”; use 〜ば〜ほど. Replacing たとえ can change the emphasis: たとえ more clearly introduces a supposition, while いくら often highlights degree, persistence or a limit to what is acceptable.
