JLPT N3 · Quantity and comparison

決して~ない

Never, by no means; far from

Meaning

決して + negative is a strong, emphatic negation: 'never', 'by no means', 'far from'. It is typical of promises (決して忘れません), warnings and prohibitions (決して触らないでください) and restrained judgments (決して安くない 'by no means cheap'). It sounds serious and slightly formal.

Formation

When to use it

Where to use it
Firm promises and vows (決して誰にも言いません), warnings in notices and instructions (決して手を触れないでください), and understated judgments in speech and writing: 決して楽な仕事ではない 'it's by no means an easy job'.
Where not to use it
Grammar: 決して needs a negative predicate: ✗決して来ます — for an affirmative 'definitely' use 必ず. Style: for an everyday fact ('I didn't watch TV at all') 決して sounds too solemn; in conversation 全然 or 絶対(に) is more natural.

  • In prohibitions 決して reinforces ~ないでください/~てはいけない, as in notices and instructions: 'under no circumstances…'.
  • 必ず is an affirmative 'definitely'; 決して is its negative counterpart: 必ず来る ↔ 決して来ない.
  • 絶対に works with both affirmatives and negatives and sounds more casual; 決して is negative-only and more formal.

Common mistakes

  • ✗ 明日は決して来ます。 → ✓ 明日は必ず来ます。 — 'I'll definitely come' is affirmative and needs 必ず; 決して only goes with a negative.
  • ✗ 東京の家賃は決して安いではない。 → ✓ 決して安くない。 — い-adjectives are negated with 〜くない; ではない follows な-adjectives and nouns.
  • △ 昨日のドラマ、決して見なかった。 (meant 'I didn't watch it at all') → 全然見なかった。 — 決して sounds like a vow or a principle; for a plain fact in conversation use 全然.
