Meaning
A written-style 'judging from the fact that…'. The ことから part is a fact or sign on which a conclusion rests (…ことから、〜とわかる/と考えられる), or the reason something got its name (…ことから、〜と呼ばれている). For everyday personal reasons から or ので are the usual choice.
Formation
- V普通形+ことから: たまっている → たまっていることから
- Aい+ことから: 古い → 古いことから
- Aな+な/である+ことから: きれい → きれいなことから; 丈夫 → 丈夫であることから
- N+である/だった+ことから: 島国 → 島国であることから; 港 → 港だったことから
When to use it
- Where to use it
- Explanations and conclusions in articles, guidebooks and reports: 足跡があることから…と考えられる, 形が似ていることから…と呼ばれる. Typical endings: とわかる, と考えられる, らしい, と呼ばれている, という名前がついた.
- Where not to use it
- Grammar: the second half can't be a request, command, invitation or intention (傘を持っていきなさい) — use から/ので there; な-adjectives and nouns need な/である before こと. Style: for personal everyday reasons ('I was tired, so I went to bed') ことから sounds far too formal.

Important notes
- Compared with ため: ため directly names the cause of an event, while ことから usually gives the fact a conclusion or a name is based on. For a clue ことから is the natural choice: newspapers piling up aren't why the neighbors left, they are a sign of it (新聞がたまっていることから、留守らしい).
- Nouns normally take である (島国であることから); Nなことから appears in casual writing, but である is the safer choice for learners.
- ことで marks a means or cause that brings about a result (毎日練習することで上手になる); ことから gives the grounds for a conclusion or a name.
Common mistakes
- ✗ 交通が便利ことから、人気がある。 → ✓ 交通が便利なことから (便利であることから)、人気がある。 — a な-adjective needs な or である.
- ✗ 雨が降りそうなことから、傘を持っていきなさい。 → ✓ 雨が降りそうだから、傘を持っていきなさい。 — a command or request can't follow ことから.
- △ 頭が痛かったことから、早く寝た。 (meant simply 'I went to bed early because I had a headache') → 頭が痛かったので、早く寝た。 — about your own health ことから sounds like a police report; everyday speech uses ので or から.
