～をこめて — Putting a feeling into it: with love, with gratitude | JLPT N3 grammar

Meaning

Shows which feeling or wish is put into an action or object: 心をこめて 'with all one's heart', 感謝をこめて 'with gratitude'. N can only be a feeling, thought or wish; tools and materials do not fit here.

Formation

N＋をこめて＋V: 感謝の気持ち → 感謝の気持ちをこめて書いた
N＋をこめた＋N: 思い → 思いをこめたセーター
N1＋に＋N2＋をこめる (what it is put into): 歌 → 歌に思いをこめる

When to use it

Where to use it: Gifts, letters, songs, food and work made with feeling: 「心をこめて作った料理」; as a sign-off on a card — 「愛をこめて」 'with love'.
Where not to use it: It does not mark an instrument or material (ペンで書く, 木で作る). It expresses putting feeling, intention or effort into something: 感謝をこめて, 力をこめて.

Important notes

Common pairings: 心をこめて, 愛をこめて, 感謝をこめて, 願いをこめて, 思いをこめて, 祈りをこめて. It can also be written with kanji: 込めて.
The set phrase 力をこめて, 'with all one's strength' (to squeeze, to press), is a common exception where physical effort rather than a feeling is put in.
をもって is bookish 'with (an attitude), by means of': 誠意をもって対応する describes a manner; をこめて is a feeling poured into a specific thing or act.

Common mistakes

✗ 心でこめて作りました。 → ✓ 心をこめて作りました。 — こめる is a transitive verb 'to put in', so what is put in takes を.
✗ 新しいペンをこめて手紙を書いた (using the pen as a tool) → ✓ 新しいペンで手紙を書いた — で marks the instrument; this をこめて pattern invests feeling, intention or effort.
✗ 思いをこもった手紙 → ✓ 思いをこめた手紙／思いのこもった手紙 — こもる 'to be contained' is intransitive and cannot take を.
