Meaning
Names the cause the speaker credits for a good outcome, so it carries a sense of gratitude. Used about a bad outcome, おかげで is sarcastic: "thanks a lot for that." It is not a neutral "because": what follows is an outcome that has already come about, never a request or intention.
Formation
- V (plain form)+おかげで: 協力してくれた → 協力してくれたおかげで; 降らなかった → 降らなかったおかげで
- i-adjective+おかげで: 近い → 近いおかげで
- na-adjective+な+おかげで: 静かだ → 静かなおかげで
- Noun+の+おかげで: 先輩 → 先輩のおかげで
- Sentence-final: …のは、noun+の / plain form+おかげだ (です): 先輩 → 先輩のおかげです
- Guess: …おかげか、…: 新しい枕 → 新しい枕のおかげか、よく眠れる
When to use it
- Where to use it
- When crediting people or circumstances for a happy outcome: 皆さんのおかげで無事に終わりました, 薬のおかげで熱が下がった. Fine in both casual and polite speech.
- Where not to use it
- Not for a neutral, evaluation-free cause (news and announcements use ため), and not before a request or intention: ✗雨がやんだおかげで、出かけよう. For a bad outcome without sarcasm, use せいで.
