JLPT N3 · Time and reason

~せいで・~せいだ・~せいか

Because of: the culprit behind a bad result; せいか = maybe

Meaning

Names the cause of an unwelcome result and puts the blame on it: 雪のせいで電車が止まった. せいか softens this to "probably because of..." when the speaker isn't sure. Unlike から or ので, せいで is never followed by a request or intention, only by something that happened.

Formation

  1. V (plain form)+せいで: 夜更かしした → 夜更かししたせいで; 見なかった → 見なかったせいで
  2. i-adjective+せいで: 暑い → 暑いせいで
  3. na-adjective+な+せいで: 複雑だ → 複雑なせいで
  4. Noun+の+せいで: 大雪 → 大雪のせいで
  5. Sentence-final: …のは、…せいだ (です): ミスをした → ミスをしたせいだ
  6. Guess: plain form / noun+の+せいか、…: 年 → 年のせいか、疲れやすい

When to use it

Where to use it
When explaining a failure, complaining, or owning up: 寝不足のせいで頭が痛い, 私のせいです. せいか is for a cause you only suspect: 気のせいか "maybe it's just me."
Where not to use it
Not for good results (use おかげで), and not before a request, advice or intention: ✗雨のせいで、家にいましょう → 雨だから、家にいましょう. Neutral announcements and news usually use ため.
