Meaning
The speaker judges from visible signs that something is unlikely to happen: 'it doesn't look like…', 'there's little chance that…'. The negation comes after そう, while the verb stays in its ます-stem: やみそうもない, 間に合いそうにない. It is an estimate of likelihood, not a flat 'it can't be'.
Formation
- Vます (u-verb) + そうもない / そうにない: 間に合います → 間に合いそうもない
- Vます (ru-verb) + そうもない / そうにない: 晴れます → 晴れそうにない
- する / 来る — します → しそうにない; 来ます → 来そうもない
- Potential verbs: 覚えられます → 覚えられそうにない; 買えます → 買えそうもない
- Variants: そうにもない (more emotional); polite そうもありません / そうにありません; past そうもなかった / そうになかった: 終わります → 終わりそうにありません / 終わりそうになかった
When to use it
- Where to use it
- For forecasts based on the situation and for judging your own abilities: 雨はやみそうもない, 今日中に終わりそうにない, 一週間では覚えられそうにない. Polite そうにありません fits the workplace: 三時までには間に合いそうにありません.
- Where not to use it
- Grammar: it does not attach to the dictionary form or the ない-form (✗やむそうもない, ✗やまなそうもない); plain form + そうだ is hearsay instead. With adjectives other forms are usual: 難しくなさそうだ, 難しそうではない. Style: そうにもない sounds more emotional; at work そうにありません is more natural.

Important notes
- Vなさそうだ (やまなさそうだ) also means 'doesn't look like…', but the negation sits in the verb and the tone is more neutral; そうもない / そうにない usually sounds firmer: 'no sign at all that…'. Do not combine both negative patterns in a single form.
- It often concerns something people are waiting or hoping for (the rain stopping, making it in time), so it frequently carries a note of regret. The past ~そうになかった means 'at the time it didn't look like…'.
Common mistakes
- ✗ 雨はやまなそうもない → ✓ 雨はやみそうもない — there is only one negation and it comes after そう; the verb stays in its ます-stem.
- ✗ 三時までに間に合うそうにない → ✓ 間に合いそうにない — そうにない does not follow the dictionary form (間に合うそうだ means 'I hear he'll make it').
- △ 今日中に終わらないかもしれない (meant 'by all signs I won't finish') → 今日中に終わりそうにない — かもしれない only allows for the possibility, while そうにない is a judgment from visible signs that it almost certainly won't happen.
