Meaning
A gentle nudge, 'go on, try…', 'have a look…', used by someone older or senior toward someone younger: a parent to a child, a teacher to a student. It sounds warm and encouraging. It is not a polite request — you don't say it to superiors, elders or strangers.
Formation
- Vて + ごらん: 見る → 見てごらん; 読む → 読んでごらん
- Vて + ごらんなさい (teacherly, a bit firmer): 説明する → 説明してごらんなさい
- する / 来る — 深呼吸する → 深呼吸してごらん; 来る → 来てごらん
- Roughly = Vてみなさい: 考える → 考えてごらん ≈ 考えてみなさい; ごらん comes from honorific ご覧になる 'to look', but here it is an auxiliary 'try'
- There is no negative form; 'don't…' is said differently: 触る → 触らないで (not ✗触らないでごらん)
When to use it
- Where to use it
- Parents with children, teachers with students, seniors with juniors in casual settings: ほら、見てごらん; 自分で考えてごらん; 怒らないから、言ってごらん. Common in children's books and songs.
- Where not to use it
- Grammar: ごらん only follows the て-form (✗見るごらん, ✗見ごらん); honorific ご覧になる / ご覧ください ('please take a look') are different and are used toward superiors and customers. Style: ~てごらん is impolite toward a boss, a customer or an older person — use ~てみてください with them.

Important notes
- ごらん sounds gentler; ごらんなさい is firmer and teacherly. It is usually written in kana; the kanji 「ご覧」 is more common in ご覧になる / ご覧ください.
- Said sharply, 「もう一度言ってごらん」 can be a challenge: 'go on, say that again!'. Context and tone tell you which.
- ~てみてください is a neutral polite 'please try', fine for superiors and strangers; ~てごらん is warm and talks down.
Common mistakes
- ✗ 食べるごらん → ✓ 食べてごらん — ごらん comes only after the て-form.
- ✗ (to a manager) 部長、この資料を読んでごらん → ✓ 部長、この資料をご覧いただけますか — ~てごらん talks down; it is impolite toward superiors.
- ✗ 先生、この写真をごらんしてください → ✓ 先生、この写真をご覧ください — the honorific verb is ご覧になる; 'ご覧する' is not used.
