Meaning
Vてはじめて means 'only once A happened did I finally realize, understand or manage B'. Before A, B wasn't there. The second clause is a realization or a new state, not an ordinary deliberate action.
Formation
- Vて+はじめて: 読んで → 読んではじめて; 持って → 持ってはじめて
- Nに/Vなく+なって+はじめて: 親になって → 親になってはじめて; 会えなくなって → 会えなくなってはじめて
- N+があって+はじめて, 'only thanks to N': 協力があって → 協力があってはじめて
When to use it
- Where to use it
- For an eye-opening personal experience: 病気になってはじめて健康のありがたさが分かった, 親になってはじめて親の気持ちが分かる.
- Where not to use it
- The second clause can't be a plan, request or ordinary action (✗説明を聞いてはじめて、質問しましょう). Don't confuse it with the adverb はじめて 'for the first time': 日本に来て、はじめてすしを食べた, 'ate sushi for the first time'.

Important notes
- Typical second clauses: 分かる, 気づく, 知る, 実感する, ~ようになる, ~できる. The same idea with a negative: 言われるまで気づかなかった ≈ 言われてはじめて気づいた.
- Often written with kanji: ~て初めて. It carries a sense of belated understanding — 'I never appreciated it before'.
- はじめて(副詞) — the adverb はじめて means 'for the first time' (はじめて納豆を食べた); the pattern Vてはじめて means 'not until A did I realize or manage'.
Common mistakes
- ✗ 病気になったはじめて、健康のありがたさが分かった。 → ✓ 病気になってはじめて、健康のありがたさが分かった。 — the て form is required.
- ✗ 説明を聞いてはじめて、質問しましょう。 → ✓ 説明を聞いてから、質問しましょう。 — てはじめて can't take a suggestion or request; for a sequence of actions use てから.
- ✗ 言われるまで気づいた。 → ✓ 言われてはじめて気づいた。 — まで needs a negative (言われるまで気づかなかった), while てはじめて takes a positive.

Pick the translation of each sentence. The wrong options translate similar patterns, so watch the grammar rather than the words.
Similar grammar
- 〜てからてから is plain sequence and B can be anything, including a plan; てはじめて means 'only after A', with B a realization or new state.
- ~てからでないと・~てからでなければてからでないと means “B is impossible until A,” usually with a negative B; てはじめて means “only after A does B become possible.” Both can describe a general condition, not only a specific past event.
- 〜までVるまで~なかった says the same with a negative (言われるまで気づかなかった); まで doesn't work this way with a positive second clause, whereas てはじめて does.
