Meaning
Vます+ようがない means "there is no way to do it", however much you want to: 連絡のしようがない — "there's no means of contacting them". The variant ようもない is more emphatic: "no way at all".
Formation
- Vます+ようがない: 読む → 読みようがない
- Nする → Nしようがない: 説明する → 説明しようがない
- Nの+しようがない: 連絡 → 連絡のしようがない
- Vます+ようもない (emphatic): 確かめる → 確かめようもない
- Polite: Vます+ようがありません: 読む → 読みようがありません
When to use it
- Where to use it
- When you lack the means or information to act: 住所が分からなくて連絡のしようがない, 部品がなくて修理のしようもない. In business: お答えのしようがありません.
- Where not to use it
- Not for prohibitions or lack of skill (泳げない — "I can't swim"). It does not mean "there's no way it's true" — that is わけがない/はずがない.

Important notes
- The idiom しょうがない ("it can't be helped") is a separate set phrase; this topic is about "no way to do X".
- The reason — what is missing — is usually stated: 分からない, ない, 手に入らない; without it the sentence feels cut off.
Common mistakes
- ✗ 読むようがない → ✓ 読みようがない — よう attaches to the ます-stem.
- ✗ 謝ろうがない → ✓ 謝りようがない — this is not the volitional 謝ろう but the stem 謝り+よう.
- ✗ 私は泳ぎようがない (meaning "I can't swim") → ✓ 私は泳げない — ようがない means no means in the situation, not lack of skill.
