When to use it
- Where to use it
- When circumstances leave no choice: 終電を逃したから、タクシーで帰るしかない; and as resolve: ここまで来たら、やるしかない.
- Where not to use it

Important notes
- Tense and politeness change at the end (しかなかった, しかありません); the verb before しか is always in the dictionary form.
- やるしかない is a popular "it has to be done" — determination, not just resignation.
Common mistakes
- ✗ 帰らないしかない → ✓ 帰るしかない — しかない already contains the negation; the verb stays in the dictionary form.
- ✗ 帰ったしかない → ✓ 帰るしかなかった — the past tense goes at the end, not before しか.
- ✗ もう一泊しかしなかった (meaning "had to stay") → ✓ もう一泊するしかなかった — N+しか+Vない means "only", not "had to".
