Meaning
あまり(に)/あまりにも before an adjective or verb means 'too, excessively', usually followed by a consequence: あまりにも高くて諦めた. あまりの+N+に and Nの/Vる+あまり say that the extreme degree of a feeling or state caused a reaction. Not to be confused with あまり〜ない 'not very': here the predicate is affirmative.
Formation
- あまり(に)/あまりにも+Aい — 長い → あまりに長くて、寝てしまった
- あまり(に)/あまりにも+Aな — 急な話 → あまりにも急な話
- あまり(に)/あまりにも+V — 違う → あまりにも違うので
- あまりの+Aい→Aさ+に — 寒い → あまりの寒さに
- あまりの+N+に — ショック → あまりのショックに
- Nの+あまり: 心配 → 心配のあまり
- Vる+あまり: 急ぐ → 急ぐあまり
When to use it
- Where to use it
- When the degree is so high that something happens because of it or you react to it: あまりにも暑くて眠れない, あまりの痛さに声が出た, 緊張のあまり手が震えた. ~あまり and あまりの〜に are bookish — at home in narratives, news and writing.
- Where not to use it
- Grammar: a bare あまり in an affirmative predicate at the end of a simple sentence, with no と/ので/て after it, is not used (✗この部屋はあまり広い。) — it sounds like the start of 'not very…'; say あまりにも広い or 広すぎる. Style: in casual speech ~すぎて is more common than ~あまり/あまりの〜に (心配しすぎて眠れない).

Important notes
- あまりにも sounds stronger and more emotional, あまりに slightly more restrained and literary. Bare あまり without a negative appears mainly in conditional and reason clauses: あまり無理をすると…, あまり高いので…
- After あまりの〜に and ~あまり the second part is usually an involuntary reaction or result (泣き出した, 眠れなかった, 忘れてきた) rather than a request or intention. なAな+あまり (慎重なあまり) also exists but is less common.
Common mistakes
- ✗ あまりの寒いに震えた → ✓ あまりの寒さに震えた — あまりの must be followed by a noun, so the adjective becomes Aさ.
- ✗ この問題はあまり難しいです。 → ✓ この問題はあまりにも難しいです。 — a bare あまり at the end of a simple affirmative sentence expects a negative ('not very…').
- ✗ 心配あまり、眠れなかった → ✓ 心配のあまり、眠れなかった — a noun joins あまり with の.
