Meaning
The speaker judges the situation: something more important is going on, so doing A right now is out of place. It often sounds like a reproach to yourself or someone else and a push to switch priorities. It isn't the conditional 'in case' (場合は).
Formation
When to use it
- Where to use it
- When someone is busy with the wrong thing given what matters now: It works both in self-talk and in business speech:
- Where not to use it
- Grammar: it doesn't mean 'in case' (that's 場合は), and it doesn't describe being unable to do something because of circumstances (that's どころではない). Style: じゃない is casual; said to a superior it can sound blunt, so people soften it (今はそれより…).

Important notes
- Most often it follows Vている, focusing on what someone is doing right now; Vる appears with one-off decisions (店を出す場合ではない).
- It often comes with 今は, もう, こんなときに, and the next sentence says what to do instead: 文句を言っている場合じゃない、手を動かそう.
Common mistakes
- ✗ 遊んだ場合ではない → ✓ 遊んでいる場合ではない — Vた+場合 reads as a condition: 'in the case that you played'.
- ✗ 遊んでいる場合がない → ✓ 遊んでいる場合ではない — 場合がない means 'such cases never happen'; 'no time for' is the negated copula では / じゃ.
Nの場合 means “in the case of games”. To say that circumstances prevent playing, use the different pattern
