Meaning
Circumstances (being busy, ill, in trouble) leave no time, energy or mood for A: 'A is out of the question'. A is usually something ordinary or enjoyable — a break, studying, a festival. It isn't 'far from A, actually B' (どころか).
Formation
- N+どころではない: 旅行 → 旅行どころではない
- Vる+どころではない: 寝る → 寝るどころではない
- それ+どころではない (set phrase, 'I can't deal with that now'): それ → それどころではない
- Casual / polite / past: 勉強 → 勉強どころじゃない / 勉強どころではありません / 勉強どころではなかった
When to use it
- Where to use it
- When explaining why something is impossible right now: 熱があって勉強どころじゃない, 年末は忙しくて休憩どころじゃない. Also handy for turning down an invitation: ごめん、それどころじゃないんだ.
- Where not to use it
- Grammar: it doesn't take の (✗旅行のどころ) and doesn't need a 'but even B' continuation — that's どころか; nor does it mean 'it's not that…' (that's わけではない). Meaning: if A is possible but inappropriate and someone is actually doing it, 〜ている場合ではない fits better.

Important notes
- Tense and politeness go at the end: 花見どころではなかった, 寝るどころではありません; before どころ use a noun or the dictionary form.
- Less often, どころではない intensifies a degree: 寒いどころじゃない、凍えそうだ — 'cold is an understatement, I'm freezing'.
Common mistakes
- ✗ 旅行のどころではない → ✓ 旅行どころではない — a noun attaches to どころ directly.
- ✗ 寝たどころではなかった → ✓ 寝るどころではなかった — the past tense goes at the end; the verb before どころ stays in dictionary form.
- ✗ 忙しくて、旅行どころか。 → ✓ 忙しくて、旅行どころではない。 — どころか needs a continuation ('…I can't even get weekends off'); to end on 'no room for A', use どころではない.
