Meaning
A suffix on nouns. Read ちゅう when something is in progress (会議中, 工事中) or must be done within a period (今週中に, 午前中); read じゅう when it covers the whole time or the whole place (一日中, 一年中, 世界中, 家中). Meaning helps, but fixed readings must be learned: 午前中 is always ごぜんちゅう, whether it means ‘by noon’ or ‘all morning’.

- Signs and status messages (工事中, 営業中, 電話中), deadlines at work or school (今週中に出す, 午前中は留守), and 'all, everywhere': 一日中雨, 世界中で人気.
- Where not to use it
- Grammar: 中 attaches to nouns, not to verbs or adjectives (✗ 食べる中 — say 食事中 or 食べているところ); in the 'in progress' sense ちゅう goes mainly with action nouns. 'Inside' is 中(なか) with の: 箱の中, 町の中.

Important notes
- Reading exceptions: 今日中に (きょうじゅうに) and 今年中に (ことしじゅう／ことしちゅう) mean 'by the end of the period' but are usually read じゅう.
- 夏休み中 has two readings — なつやすみちゅう 'during the summer holidays', なつやすみじゅう 'all summer long'.
- 中(なか) with の means 'inside' (町の中, 箱の中); 町中 (まちじゅう) without の means 'all over town'.
Common mistakes
- ✗ 今、食べる中です。 → ✓ 今、食事中です。 (食べているところです) — 中 attaches to a noun, not a verb.
- ✗ 一日中 (いちにちちゅう) 勉強した。 → ✓ 一日中 (いちにちじゅう) 勉強した。 — 'all day' is read じゅう.
- △ そのうわさは町の中に広まった。 (meant 'spread all over town') → そのうわさは町中 (まちじゅう) に広まった。 — 町の中 is just 'in the town'; 'all over town' is 町中.

Similar grammar
- ～最中に・～最中だ最中 means 'right in the middle of', often with an interruption (食事の最中に電話が来た); it follows の or Vている. It doesn't attach to time frames like 今週 or 午前 — those take 中(ちゅう).
- ～間・～間に間／間に is a span during which something happens and can follow a clause (寝ている間に). 中 follows nouns only, usually in set words (授業中, 一日中).
- ～うちにNのうちに means 'while it's still…, before it ends' (今日のうちに片付けよう); 今日中に is a neutral deadline. 一日中 ('all day') and 一日のうちに ('within a single day') mean different things.
