Meaning
A casual counterpart of でも/も: “even X”, “X too (just like anyone else)”. With question words it means “anyone, anytime, anything”: 誰だって “everyone”, いつだって “always”. With “one + counter” and a negative it means “not a single…”.
Formation
- N + だって (replaces が/を/は): 子ども → 子どもだってできる
- N + particle (に・と…) + だって: 犬に → 犬にだって分かる
- question word + だって: 誰 → 誰だって; いつ → いつだって; 何 → 何だって; どこに → どこにだって
- 一 + counter + だって + negative — 一日 → 一日だって休まない
When to use it
- Where to use it
- In conversation with friends and family, often with a note of protest: 私だってできる “I can do it too!”, 誰だって失敗する “everyone makes mistakes”, いつだって電話して “call me anytime”.
- Where not to use it
- Not in business speech or writing — use でも or も there. Not for soft suggestions (お茶でも, not お茶だって). Do not confuse it with sentence-initial だって “but, I mean…” (だって、時間がないんだもん).

Important notes
- だって often carries feeling — “I, for one, can also…”, “even someone like that…”.
- 誰だって/何だって in positive sentences mean “everyone / everything”, while 一度だって/一日だって with a negative mean “not once / not a single day”.
- 誰も usually goes with a negative (“nobody”), but affirmative 誰もが means “everyone”: 誰もが知っている. It is a little more formal than 誰でも/誰だって.
- だって(文頭) — sentence-initial だって is a justification, “but, I mean…”: だって、眠かったんだもん. It is a separate word, not a particle after a noun.
Common mistakes
- ✗ 子どもだってが分かる問題だ。 → ✓ 子どもだって分かる問題だ。 — だって replaces が and を; with other particles it follows them: 子どもにだって.
- ✗ 子どもって解けるよ (meaning “even a child”) → ✓ 子どもだって解けるよ — って only introduces a topic and has no “even” meaning.
- ✗ コーヒーだって飲まない? → ✓ コーヒーでも飲まない? — だって cannot soften an invitation; “coffee or something” needs でも.

Pick the translation of each sentence. The wrong options translate similar patterns, so watch the grammar rather than the words.
Similar grammar
- 〜でもでも means the same “even” but is more neutral and fits polite speech; it can also soften a suggestion (お茶でも), which だって cannot.
- 〜ってって introduces a topic or a quote — 子どもって… “kids, they…”, 雨だって “I hear it’ll rain” (だ + って). だって after a noun mid-sentence adds “even, too”: 子どもだってできる.
- 〜もも is a calm “also”; だって is an emotional “me too, you know” or “even”.
