Meaning
こそ strongly highlights a word — “X and nothing else”. After から it means “precisely because”, after the て-form “only by doing… (does it really work)”. In polite replies, こちらこそ means “it is I who (should thank you / apologize)”.
Formation
- N + こそ (replaces は/が/を): 今年 → 今年こそ合格する
- N + particle (に・で…) + こそ: あなたに → あなたにこそ読んでほしい
- plain form + から + こそ: 好きだ → 好きだからこそ; いる → いるからこそ
- Vて + こそ: 努力する → 努力してこそ
When to use it
- Where to use it
- For firm resolutions and emphasis: 今年こそ “this year for sure”, これこそ “this is exactly it”, 忙しい時こそ “especially when you’re busy”. As a reply to thanks or an apology: こちらこそ.
- Where not to use it
- It does not mean “even” — that is さえ/でも (子どもでさえ知っている). It never follows ので; only からこそ is possible. In a neutral sentence without special emphasis it is out of place, and plain は is enough.

Important notes
- Vてこそ usually ends in an evaluation: 〜てこそ…だ/…できる “only that way can you truly…”.
- こそ sounds emotional and decisive. Written Japanese also has 〜こそ〜が “admittedly…, but” (量こそ少ないが), a bookish pattern.
Common mistakes
- ✗ 好きなのでこそ厳しく言う → ✓ 好きだからこそ厳しく言う — こそ attaches to から; it never combines with ので.
- ✗ 努力したこそ、成功できた → ✓ 努力してこそ — こそ needs the て-form here (or から: 努力したからこそ).
- ✗ この問題は子どもこそ解ける (meaning “even a child”) → ✓ 子どもでさえ解ける — こそ means “precisely”, not “even”.

Pick the translation of each sentence. The wrong options translate similar patterns, so watch the grammar rather than the words.
Similar grammar
- 〜はは just sets the topic or a mild contrast; こそ is a strong “this and nothing else”. In a neutral sentence こそ is overkill.
- ~さえ・~でさえさえ means “even” (an extreme case), こそ means “precisely” (the key case): 子どもでさえ分かる “even a child understands” ≠ 子どもこそ分かる “it is precisely the child who understands”.
- ~からといってからこそ means “precisely because…” with a direct conclusion; からといって means “just because… doesn’t mean” and needs a negative conclusion.
- のでので states a reason neutrally and never takes こそ; only からこそ is possible.
