Meaning
めったに + negative is about frequency — 'rarely', 'hardly ever', 'seldom'. It isn't an absolute zero — exceptions happen, just very seldom. In this meaning it is not used without a negative.
Formation
- めったに + Vない/Vません — 帰る → めったに帰らない
- めったに + Vない (potential form) — 会える → めったに会えない
- めったに + Aく/Aにならない — 寒くなる → めったに寒くならない
- N + は/が + めったにない: 大雪がある → 大雪はめったにない
- めったにない + N — チャンス → めったにないチャンス
When to use it
- Where to use it
- For rare events and habits: 父はめったに怒らない 'my father rarely gets angry', この辺りでは大雪はめったにない. A set phrase: めったにない機会/チャンス 'a rare opportunity'.
- Where not to use it
- Grammar: めったに needs a negative predicate (✗めったに映画を見ます); for an affirmative 'occasionally' use たまに. Meaning: it is about frequency only — not degree ('not very tasty' is あまりおいしくない) and not a stubborn failure ('I just can't fall asleep' is なかなか眠れない).

- めったに~ない often stresses how precious something is: めったに見られない 'you don't see that often — enjoy it'.
- たまに means 'occasionally' and usually goes with an affirmative: たまに行く; めったに goes with a negative: めったに行かない.
Common mistakes
- ✗ 週末はめったに映画を見ます。 → ✓ 週末はたまに映画を見ます。 — 'I sometimes watch' is affirmative; めったに is never used without a negative.
- ✗ めったにないのチャンスだから、挑戦してみたら? → ✓ めったにないチャンス — the modifier めったにない attaches to the noun directly, without の.
