Meaning
Shows that an outcome differed from what was expected or forecast (予想に反して), or that an action goes against a rule, law or someone's will (規則に反する行為). It follows a noun and has a written, news-like tone.
Formation
- N+に反して: 予想 → 予想に反して
- N+に反し (written style): 多くの人の予想 → 多くの人の予想に反し
- N+に反する+N: 規則 → 規則に反する行為
- N+に反した+N: 事実 → 事実に反した内容
When to use it
- Where to use it
- With nouns of expectation (予想, 期待, 予報, 予測) when things turn out differently, and with rules and wishes (規則, 法律, 意志, 希望) when they are violated: 予想に反して勝った, 本人の意志に反して. Common in news, reports and regulations.
- Where not to use it
- Grammar: it attaches only to nouns (not to verbs or adjectives), and it doesn't mean 'toward a person' or a plain contrast 'whereas…' (that's に対して). Style: in casual talk 思ったより, 予想と違って or のに sound more natural; に反して feels formal in conversation.
