Meaning
Shows that someone acts in another person's place or that one thing takes over from another: “in place of N, instead of N, replacing N”. It sounds more formal than のかわりに and often describes social change (人に代わってロボットが働く). に代わり is the written variant.
Formation
When to use it
- Where to use it
- When someone fills another person's role or something new replaces the old: 部長に代わって会議に出る (“attend a meeting in place of the department manager”), 現金に代わってスマホ決済が広まった (“smartphone payment became widespread in place of cash”).
- Where not to use it
- Not after a verb and not for a trade-off (✗日曜に働くに代わって → 日曜に働くかわりに), and not for doing something for someone's benefit (that is のために).

- The person being replaced is marked with に: 社長に代わって. 社長が代わって means something else — “the president has changed”.
Common mistakes

- ✗ 母のために挨拶をした (meaning “in my mother's place”) → ✓ 母に代わって挨拶をした — のために means “for my mother's sake”, not “instead of her”.
- ✗ 社長が代わって、副社長が挨拶した → ✓ 社長に代わって、副社長が挨拶した — the person replaced takes に; 社長が代わって means “the president has changed”.
