Meaning
Shows for whom (or for what) something is important, difficult, useful or unfamiliar: “for N, from N's point of view”. It is always followed by an evaluation — an adjective or an expression of significance — never by a deliberate action. Doing something for someone's sake is のために.
Formation
When to use it
- Where to use it
- When something is judged from the standpoint of a person, group or organization: 私にとって大切な思い出 (“a memory precious to me”), 会社にとって大きな損失 (“a big loss for the company”).
- Where not to use it
- Not for doing something for someone's benefit (✗彼にとってプレゼントを買う → 彼のために), not for an attitude toward someone (✗私にとって優しい → 私に対して優しい), and not for a role (that is として).
