JLPT N3 · Particles: roles and direction

~を中心に(して)

Around N; centered on N; mainly N

Meaning

Shows that N is the center around which something is located or happens: a place, a person, a topic, a group of people. It often means 'mainly in / among N'. It does not mean 'based on' (をもとに), and it is not the physical middle of an object.

Formation

  1. N+を中心に: 駅 → 駅を中心に
  2. N+を中心にして/を中心として: 山田さん → 山田さんを中心にして
  3. N+を中心とした/を中心とする+N: 若い女性 → 若い女性を中心とした客

When to use it

Where to use it
For layout (駅を中心に店が並ぶ), spread (関東を中心に雪が降る), the main group of people (小学生を中心に人気), a team built around a leader, or a discussion focused on one topic.
Where not to use it
Not for source material (a film based on a novel is 小説をもとに), and not for the physical middle of a thing: 'in the middle of the table' is テーブルの真ん中に.
