JLPT N3 · Time and reason

~を通して・~を通じて

Through a go-between or experience; all through a period

Meaning

Two meanings. 1) 'Through, by way of': a person, the media, an experience or an activity through which you learn something, meet someone or gain a skill. 2) 'Throughout a whole period, without exception': 一年を通して. It isn't used for a physical tool — that's で.

Formation

  1. N (go-between, channel, experience) + を通して: 友人 → 友人を通して
  2. N (period) + を通して: 年間 → 年間を通して
  3. N + を通じて (slightly more formal, same meanings): ニュース → ニュースを通じて
  4. Vる + こと + を通して / を通じて: ボランティアをする → ボランティアをすることを通じて
  5. N + を通しての / を通じての + N: スポーツ → スポーツを通しての交流

When to use it

Where to use it
Meeting people, news, experience and communication — 友人を通して知り合う, ニュースを通じて知る, 留学を通して学ぶ; describing climate and seasons — 年間を通して暖かい.
Where not to use it
Not for a physical tool: ✗ペンを通して書く → ペンで書く. In meaning 2, not for a one-off event inside the period: ✗一年を通して一回旅行した → この一年で一回旅行した.

  • を通じて is a little more formal and common in announcements and the news, while を通して is more usual in conversation; the meanings are the same.
  • In meaning 2, B is a constant state or an action covering the whole period (一年を通して雨が多い); unlike にわたって, it doesn't emphasise scale.

Common mistakes

  • ✗ ボールペンを通して名前を書いてください → ✓ ボールペンで名前を書いてください — a tool takes で; を通して is for a go-between or channel.
  • ✗ 一年を通して、一度旅行に行った → ✓ この一年の間に一度旅行に行った — in meaning 2 the action lasts the whole period rather than happening once inside it.
  • ✗ 友達を通って知り合った → ✓ 友達を通して知り合った — 通る 'to pass' doesn't fit here; the pattern uses 通して (or 通じて).
