Meaning
Emphasizes extent or coverage: an action spans an entire period, area or series of repetitions. The event is often lengthy or large in scale, but there is no fixed minimum duration. The style is usually formal.
Formation
- N (period) + にわたって: 三か月 → 三か月にわたって
- N (space, area) + にわたって: 広い範囲 → 広い範囲にわたって
- N (number of times) + にわたって: 五回 → 五回にわたって
- N + にわたり (written): 三百年 → 三百年にわたり
- N + にわたる + N: 五時間 → 五時間にわたる会議
When to use it
- Where to use it
- News and formal texts about long events and large areas: 十年にわたる研究, 全国にわたって雨が降る, 三回にわたって話し合う.
- Where not to use it
- Not with a point in time (✗三時にわたって). It can sound heavy in a casual account of a short action, but seconds and minutes are grammatically possible: 十秒間にわたって揺れが続いた. For approximate endpoints, normally use から〜にかけて.

Important notes
- The speaker stresses that the time or area is large: 三日間続いた is a neutral fact, while 三日間にわたって続いた means 'went on for three whole days'.
- Before a verb use にわたって or the more bookish にわたり; before a noun use にわたる (less often にわたった).
Common mistakes
- ✗ 会議は三時にわたって続いた → ✓ 会議は三時間にわたって続いた — you need a span of time, not a point.
- ✗ 五時間にわたって会議 → ✓ 五時間にわたる会議 — before a noun the form is にわたる.
- ✗ 全国をわたって雨が降った → ✓ 全国にわたって雨が降った — the pattern uses に; を + 渡る means 'to cross'.

Pick the translation of each sentence. The wrong options translate similar patterns, so watch the grammar rather than the words.
Similar grammar

- ~を通して・~を通じてを通して (period) means 'the whole time without exception', often about a constant state (一年を通して暖かい); にわたって is about the scale of an event, its length and area.
- ~から~にかけてから〜にかけて sets rough limits 'from … to …'; にわたって usually attaches to a single period or area and stresses scale: 三日間にわたって, 九州全域にわたって.
