Meaning
Causative て-form + いただく humbly presents the speaker’s own action as permitted by the listener or a third party and beneficial to the speaker. させていただきます announces the action; questions such as させていただけませんか or させていただいてもよろしいですか ask permission. With ていただく, another person performs the action.
Formation
- Group 1 verbs: causative in -aせる → -aせていただく: 読む → 読ませていただく
- Group 2 verbs: -させる → -させていただく: 考える → 考えさせていただく
- する and N + する — させていただく — 説明する → 説明させていただく
- 来る — 来させて (こさせて) いただく — 来る → 来させていただきます
- Forms: させていただきます (announcing), させていただきました (did), させていただきたい (would like to), させていただいてもよろしいですか (may I?)
When to use it
- Where to use it
- Business and formal speech: announcements, presentations, emails, polite refusals and thanks for an opportunity: 説明させていただきます, 休ませていただきます, 司会を務めさせていただきます.
- Where not to use it
- When neither another person’s permission nor a perceived benefit to the speaker is involved, the expression is often excessive: 山田と申します is enough for an ordinary introduction. Use ていただく when another person acts for the speaker’s benefit.

Important notes
- Overused, it sounds fawning; in simple cases いたします or 拝見します is enough.
- In notices, 値上げさせていただきます announces a decision rather than asking for consent. This politeness is not always appropriate: when the recipient’s permission is not involved, 料金を改定いたします is simpler.
Common mistakes
- ✗ 読まさせていただきます → ✓ 読ませていただきます — no extra さ: Group 1 causatives are built on the -a stem without さ.
- ✗ 説明していただきます (meaning “I will explain”) → ✓ 説明させていただきます — with ていただく another person explains; with させていただく the speaker explains.
- ✗ 私は山田と申させていただきます → ✓ 山田と申します — no permission is involved, so the pattern sounds unnatural.
