Meaning
Vた+ものだ nostalgically recalls something that happened again and again in the past: "we would often…". It describes your own long-ago habits or how things used to be done; it is not used for one-off events.
Formation

- Nする → Nした+ものだ: 勉強する → 勉強したものだ
- Polite: Vた+ものです: 語り合う → 語り合ったものです
- Casual: Vた+もんだ: 行く → 行ったもんだ
- Typical companions: 昔は/子どものころは/よく+Vた+ものだ: よく叱られる → よく叱られたものだ
When to use it
- Where to use it
- In memories of childhood, student days or the old days: 子どものころは、この川でよく泳いだものだ. Often with よく, 毎日, or 〜と (whenever…).

Important notes
- The tone is warm nostalgia; a neutral "used to often do" without it is よく〜ていた.
- Less often it appears with adjectives and the copula: 昔はこの辺りも静かだったものだ.
- This topic covers habitual reminiscence. The same form can also express surprise at a result: よくここまで成長したものだ, “how much he has grown.” The restriction on single events applies to the habitual meaning, not every Vたものだ sentence.
Common mistakes
- ✗ 去年京都に行ったものだ → ✓ 去年京都に行った — たものだ describes a repeated habit, not a single trip.
- ✗ 子どものころはよく泳ぐものだ → ✓ 子どものころはよく泳いだものだ — a memory needs the た-form; the dictionary form states a general truth.
- ✗ よく泳いでものだ → ✓ よく泳いだものだ — もの attaches to the た-form, not the て-form.
