When to use it
- Where to use it
- In generalizations and admonitions: 慣れない仕事は疲れるものだ, 目上の人には敬語で話すものです; in reflective exclamations about life: 時間がたつのは早いものですね.
- Where not to use it
- Generalizing ものだ does not neutrally report a single event or a personal decision. However, exclamatory ものだ can evaluate a specific change: よくここまで成長したものだ. Distinguish this from habitual reminiscence with Vたものだ and causal ものだから.

Common mistakes

- ✗ そんな言葉を使わないものではない → ✓ そんな言葉を使うものではない — in a ban the negation comes at the end; the verb stays in the dictionary form.
- △ 人の気持ちは変わったものだ (as a general truth) → 人の気持ちは変わるものだ — 変わったものだ can express surprise at a change that has occurred; the general rule needs the nonpast form.
