Meaning
Vる+べきだ gives the speaker's opinion of what is right or proper: "you should apologize", "it should be checked". べきではない means "shouldn't", and べきだった means "should have (but didn't)".
Formation
- Vる+べきではない (only this way, never Vない): 話す → 話すべきではない
When to use it
- Where to use it
- In opinions, debates, news commentary and business recommendations:
- Where not to use it
- It does not express probability (“must be”); use はずだ. A straightforward binding requirement more often uses なければならない; べきだ can also evaluate compliance with a law (法律は守るべきだ). A softer everyday suggestion normally uses

Common mistakes
- ✗ 話さないべきだ → ✓ 話すべきではない — the negation comes after べき; the verb stays in the dictionary form.
